What is a bunion?

Bunions, or Hallux Valgus, are bony bumps that form on the joint at the base of your big toe. They occur when some of the bones in the front part of your foot move out of place, causing the tip of your big toe to get pulled toward the smaller toes and forcing the joint at the base of your big toe to stick out, leaving a deformity in the form of an unpleasant bump.

What causes a bunion?

There are several believed contributors to bunion formation but no one specific root cause. Bunions are often believed to be hereditary in nature and passed down the family though this is not always the case. Foot disorders, injuries, flat or hyper mobile feet and arthritis can all play a part in the development of bunions. Contrary to old theory, high heels or tight fitting shoes are a contributor but not typically a root cause.
